Both disciplines look similar at first glance, but the details differ significantly.
Kickboxing uses punches and kicks with a springier, more boxing-like movement. Muay Thai adds elbows, knees and the clinch — hence the name "art of eight limbs". The tactics, distance and footwork are different.
Where you notice it in training
- Muay Thai uses a heavier lead-foot stance and more direct forward pressure.
- The clinch is a core skill to control, not escape.
- Elbows and knees are the most powerful weapons at close range.
If you have a kickboxing background, the transition is natural. The main adjustments are clinch work and generating power from a lower, more grounded stance.
